The Bering Support Network (BSN) was begun in 1986 with what is now one of the longest-running HIV/AIDS support groups in the country: the Bering Spiritual Support Group (BSSG). Today, weekly attendance at BSSG is around 55-60. Since the present database was started in 1997, BSN has served more than 4,400 persons through this program. Over the years, BSN’s focus has expanded beyond those infected by HIV/AIDS to include gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning persons and their friends and families. Because these communities are the primary recipients of our services, we have tailored our programs to address their unique needs. BSN was started by Bering Memorial United Methodist Church and continues as a ministry of the church. The BSN Board – the governing body of the Support Network – is appointed by the church. The nine Board members are actively involved in programming and fundraising. As we observe our 25th Anniversary on November 6, 2011, the BSN Board is committed to not only reflecting upon where we have been, but also taking stock of where we are today, and where we need to be in the future to meet the changing needs of our community.
